English lesson observation
Observation 2 (English lesson)
On the 12th day of April 2023, I did observe my English Associate teacher in delivering an English lesson. The focus of this observation is to observe and explore teaching and learning strategies which might assist or enhance my teaching experience in the future. In this reflection, I will basically discuss on the strengths and weaknesses of this delivery, including some remedies to overcome each of these weaknesses. In addition, I will also mention some approaches which I learned during this English lesson.
I found that there some strengths of this delivery that really helps for future plan of delivering. During the teaching and learning process, the teacher starts with a game – a game that really attracts and captive to students’ attention. Right afterward, students were engaged in the learning and positively interacted to each other. In addition, the teacher also used effective and attractive resources. Students were happily engaged with these resources as it is catering to their own unique needs of learning. The teacher also used variety of reactions (gestures) while explaining students’ activities. In this way, students were so impressed and motivated during the teaching and learning process.
However, there are also some weaknesses which occurred during the teaching and learning process. As students were able to understand the learning concepts, still some students did not unable to learn the concepts well. In addition, the teacher almost used a lot of the time to speak than the students’ opportunity to speak in the classroom.
Moreover, it is important to overcome these weaknesses than leaving it behind or to ignore it as normal. These weaknesses must be solved and as for my way as a teacher trainee to solve these weaknesses, these are my approaches. First, as a teacher I will target slow learner students to make sure they do not have any issue regarding the learning concepts before proceeding on to the next lesson. And for the second one, I will apply the 21st century approaches that one of them is to make much opportunity for students to speak out of themselves.
Furthermore, I found that after this observation I could manage to learn some approaches and personalities that are appropriate and suitable to such situation while delivering. I learned that applying body gestures including facial reactions during the delivery are very helpful in motivating a student to learn. Also, I learned that involving a game for learning also assists students to have a higher self-esteem in their learning.
To conclude, teaching and learning approaches are very essential for teachers as it help both a teacher and a student to recognize the main purpose of education. However, teaching students is not a simple one but requires ones’ capability to understand a student and his/her unique needs. In addition, resources are also the main component of teaching as it caters to each student’s learning.
